La Burrita - Fine Mexican Food
La Burrita, located at 2530 Durant Ave. in Berkeley CA was voted the best burrito place in the UC Berkeley Vicinity, so of course, I had to go try it out. It's a bit out of the way, and I would not recommend going there unless you are in town and really crave Mexican food.
Prices: I found this restaurant to be rather pricy. Yes, the burritos are good sized, but in my opinion, not worth $5.19. They sell basic burritos, as well as ones with other permutations of fillings ranging from $3.00 to about $6.00
I didn't try any of the other side dishes/entrees they offered, such as nachos, quesadillas, and salads.
Atmosphere: The store itself, was very small and crowded. I did go there almost immediately after the Cal homecoming football game, so the timing definitely factored into my experience. There was a line all the way out the door, and seating was scarce. My party got lucky and we grabbed one of the few tables, just as another group left.
Food: I found the burrito be a bit of a disappointment. The rice, in particular, was excellent, but I felt that there was simply not enough of it in the burrito. The burrito wasn't as full and substantial as some of its local counterparts like La CosteƱa. The burrito came with chips, and access to a mini-salsa bar. I am not one to eat salsa with my chips, so I didn't take advantage of the salsas available, but the people in my party seemed to enjoy them.
All in all, the experience was a bit disappointing. I was expecting perfection from the restaurant voted the best burrito place in Berkeley, but my expectations fell short. For a burrito shop, the quality is not bad, the atmosphere is lively and crowded during dinner time, and the prices are generally on the moderate to high edge.
My recommendation is to go back if you're in the area, but don't make a trip out just for the burritos.
